Abstract

A millimeter-wavelength search for the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (1972, 1980) effect was conducted at the UK IR telescope in Hawaii during September 1983. The technique of the study, and environmentally induced effects in the data are discussed. Results of observations of the clusters 0016 + 16 and A478 are presented. The Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect was observed in 0016 + 16 with a limit on the observed temperature decrement at -1.60 + or - 1.00 mK in 10 hours of integration. The effect was not observed in A478. The implications of the observations and possible sources of error are considered.
