Abstract
The Sunyaev-Zeldovich (S-Z) effect is a spectral distortion of the cosmic background radiation induced by inverse Compton scattering of the microwave photons by energetic (≈10 keV) electrons in hot astrophysical plasmas. The S-Z effect has considerable potential as a diagnostic tool for observational cosmology and also for the study of the intra-cluster medium in distant clusters of galaxies. The authors report the first ever attempt to detect the S-Z effect at a wavelength (1150 μm) where a flux increment is predicted.
