Abstract

Recent research into the politics and political culture of early modern England has focused particularly on three interrelated areas: the nature and development of the public sphere, the circulation of news and political information, and the growth and influence of political print.1 The general trajectory of scholarship in each of these domains has been to challenge older revisionist ideas about the hierarchical and broadly consensual nature of early modern politics and society. In its place a new emphasis has been laid on the social depth of political opinion and its often critical perspectives on royal government and its local representatives. This post-revisionist project has provided crucial insights into the dynamic world of politics outside court and parliament, and has also shown how these institutions needed to shape policy in the light of the variegated social contexts in which that policy operated.
