Symbolic or substantive claims: an analysis of planetary boundary impacts from tracing supply chains of UK based companies. Abstract
The research considers the planetary boundaries (PB) framework as a typology for substantive impacts within the study of sustainable supply chain management (SSCM). Three critical PB impacts - greenhouse gas pollution, phosphate flows and species extinction - are classified against contributory economic sectors, defined using the UK Standard Industry Classification (SIC) codes. Exploratory case studies of firms and their supply chains, selected according to these PB impacts are then described. The research finds alignment and misalignment with firm-level strategic advantage and regulatory intervention, and a divide between so-called substantive sustainability and symbolic sustainability, linking sense-making and bounded rationality in SSCM.
