Abstract

In contemporary parlance, scanlation is the term used to describe the process of unauthorised translation and adaptation of graphic narratives. The role that scanlation has played in the spread of Japanese manga in the Anglophone world has been long recognised, but so far little attention has been paid to the actual translation practices of these amateur translators in the field of Translation Studies. This article therefore represents an attempt to study scanlation as a translational phenomenon, making use of the theoretical and methodological tools available in Translation Studies.
