Abstract
Data sharing and exchange during construction project’s lifecycle among multiple actors within different collaborative disciplines remain a complicated, and mainly unresolved issue, due to the dynamics and fragmented nature of the construction industry. The fragmentation among software tools and actors results in several crucial collaboration issues among team members; e.g. data loss, ambiguity in ownership, legal disputes, lack of interoperability, and information overload. Several recent studies have investigated the potential of Cloud technologies in facilitating the use of BIM in collaborative construction projects by facilitating team collaboration across a building’s lifecycle using a BIM governance model that controls collaboration process within collaborative environment via promoting access to BIM objects based on team members’ roles and responsibilities. This paper highlights the challenges and discusses the opportunities of Cloud-based BIM governance, based on: (a) an extensive state-of-the-art review of literature, (b) the outcomes of a wider consultation with BIM experts, and (c) the experience gained from the implementation of BIM governance in a Cloud-based prototype using an iterative software engineering approach. The study advances our understanding of current literature regarding BIM governance. Moreover, findings also led to the development of a comprehensive framework that summarises several effective factors towards cloud-based BIM governance solutions. The results from this study are important for construction practitioners, Cloud-BIM software developers, and IT technicians within the construction industry.
