Abstract
In this paper, preliminary results of the archaeobotanical study of the material from newexcavations of the Mesolithic site of Vlasac in the Danube Gorges (Serbia) are presented. Machine otation and water sieving were employed in order to recover macro-botanical material from all excavated deposits. The analysis of carpological remains (seed, fruit, nut, tuber) showed generallylow botanical density across the deposit and a limited number of species represented, with Cornusmas (Cornelian cherry) as a most common taxon, particularly in cremation pits. The anthracological study was based on some 700 charred wood fragments, and up to 20 taxa were identied; the most frequent and abundant taxa appear to be Quercus sp. (deciduous), Cornus and Prunus. The resultsreveal the spectrum of plants gathered and used by Mesolithic inhabitants of Vlasac over the occupa-tion period included in the new excavations.
