Abstract
The Peace of Venice (1177) brought an end to nearly two decades of strife between Pope Alexander III and his allies, and the Holy Roman emperor, Frederick I. The peace resulted in several separate agreements between the parties involved, following the defeat of the emperor at the battle of Legnano in 1176. The negotiations at Venice were accompanied by splendid celebrations symbolizing the reconciliation, and the memory of these became the greatest legacy of the Peace of Venice rather than the treaties concluded.
