Abstract

The multiplicity of variables that cultural landscapes encompass make them territories with a high level of resilience. As if an acupuncture process would be, the aim has been to identify their embedded reactivation points to proceed with local interventions. Through the presentation of two of our projects developed in the studio W+G Architects, The landscape intervention around the Hercules’ Caves and The Cultural Landscape of the Jesuit Missions around Lake Tana in Ethiopia, we intend to explain the different design strategies developed for the identification and reactivation of these degraded landscapes. Finally, this article questions the concept of cultural landscape itself within the current post-crisis context through the research developed by the European Research Project EMUVE (European Mediterranean Urban Voids Ecology), directed by Federico Wulff at the Welsh School of Architecture (WSA) of Cardiff University (UK), where the author is also Lecturer of Architecture and Urban Design and Course Director of the Post-Graduate Masters of Architectural Design (MA AD).
