Abstract

This chapter explores empowerment and considers how it may be conceptualised and viewed within the context of leadership for health professionals. It also explores the issues of disempowerment and oppression in relation to health professionals and considers how caring professionals can establish empowering behaviours to counteract these issues. It argues that clinical leaders need to act as catalysts to lead change, empowering themselves and others, motivating, inspiring and leading nursing and the health service forward. Clinical leaders are in a position to demonstrate that they have eclipsed their oppressed state and to offer a guiding light for all health professionals. While clinical leaders may be held up as examples of the liberated few, it is also important that the majority of health professionals recognise approaches they can take to foster empowerment and escape from oppression.
