Abstract
Alphaviruses are a group of viruses responsible for a variety of emerging and re-emerging human diseases. Although they do not generally cause life-threatening illnesses, they can lead to debilitating and chronic conditions. However, no specific antiviral, nor a vaccine, is available for the treatment of any alphavirus infection. This clearly represents an important unmet medical need, and there is a very active research community trying to respond to this need, by working towards the design and development on novel anti-alphavirus compounds. In this chapter, we will look at the most recent strategies used by the researchers in the field to identify novel, much needed, antivirals.
