Abstract
The delivery of accessible, high quality, and affordable healthcare is a formidable challenge to governments internationally. In this volume we highlight contemporary research on human resources for healthcare, broadly conceived, in supporting the delivery of patient care within health systems. Human resource management (HRM) is concerned with the management of people and the work that they do. In healthcare, organisationally oriented HRM is complemented by a national and supranational focus in the human resources for healthcare community. This volume takes account of both perspectives and recognises interdependence between these aspects of health systems: the management of people and work through organisational strategies, practices, and processes and the broader sectoral and policy contexts in which this occurs. The range and significance of people-related challenges in healthcare is daunting. To help navigate them, this Research Handbook on Contemporary Human Resource Management for Health Care provides a collection compiled by and capturing the reflections of leading international scholars. Throughout the volume, they synthesise current research insights on specific aspects of health care human resources before identifying implications for health policy and organisational practice and developing an agenda for future research.
