Abstract

In the Preface at the very beginning of the book, we used the metaphor of a travel guide to describe how the book is intended to accompany and guide you as you find your way around the discipline of human geography. We hope you have enjoyed that journey and have come to appreciate the rich and varied terrain that the discipline covers. We know that for most of you, much more of that terrain still lies ahead, and we hope that you will occasionally dip back into the book as you chart your own route through human geography and find the areas of the subject that inspire and enthuse you. As you do so, we would urge you to remember what we said at the end of Chapter 2 – that doing human geography is about more than just learning a university subject – it is also about preparing yourself for contributing to both people and planet in a range of different ways. We've tried to help you with that preparation, not just by introducing you to the varied subject matter of human geography but also by taking a very deliberate approach to the subject which has stressed critical thinking and the diversity of voices, perspectives and knowledge systems that you can draw on. For this reason, certain themes have run through the book – those to do with social and environmental justice, feminist and Indigenous geographies, diverse economies and the pluriverse.
