Abstract
This introductory chapter reviews how geography and geographers have approached areal units that organise space and spatial relations, with reference to the three sub-disciplines of human geography, namely, urban, rural, and regional geographies. It will also reflect on the socially constructed and relational nature of territorial units and the obscuring boundaries between categories that we employ in these areas. This chapter will also provide an introduction to the chapters in the Area Geographies section.
