Abstract

The overshading phenomenon in a hot and humid climate can cause the interior space to have an insufficient natural daylight level. Designing for daylighting-thermal balance for such a climate should be appropriately considered due to their contradictory relationship. Global sensitivity analysis and multi-objective optimisation (MOO) were employed in this study to find an optimal solution that reaches a trade-off between daylighting and thermal energy performance. The methods were applied to a double-storey terrace housing archetype and changes in optimal solutions were studied for the future climate. The sensitivity analysis identified glazing transmittance (GT) as the most significant parameter for daylighting while the room depth (RD) parameter is significant for thermal energy performance. The significant parameters remained the same in the future climate, however, the optimal values within the parameters were changed. The optimal solutions observed increased daylight performance by 6% to 23%, depending on the climate scenarios. On the other hand, the selected optimal solution showed a trade-off between two extreme base cases, shaded and unshaded for thermal energy performance.
