Abstract

This chapter will explore several key issues regarding disability and the future of work. It first provides a definition of disability and then outlines trends in disability prevalence and the disability employment gap, in-work disability-related disadvantage, and how this is affected by periods of economic turbulence (e.g., the great recession and COVID). The chapter then considers several government policies that might help to address the labour market disadvantage that disabled people encounter, considering the role of certifications, mandatory reporting, government procurement, and trade union equality bargaining. The final section considers three emerging trends: demographic change; digitisation; and the gig economy.
