Abstract
Based on extensive primary and secondary sources, “Gendered Journeys” interprets the impact of Felix Mendelssohn and Fanny Hensel’s travels on their artistic creativity through the lense of gender studies. Especially important – and not only within the tradition of “Bildungsreisen” – were their respective trips to Rome. Italy inspired both musicians to compose, to increase their cultural awareness and level of self-reflection, and to experience personal developments that would impact them for the remainder of their lives.
