Abstract

The introduction provides an overview of the handbook contents, set against a discussion of the development and current scope of the sociology of work. First, we consider contemporary discourses around work and the important role that sociology and the ‘sociological imagination’ can play in cutting through the hype and hyperbole to reveal patterns of power and resistance, the material realities of work, and the interpretive meanings ascribed to them. Second, we outline key developments and continuities shaping the context and study of work, including the social structures of work and technological change. There is also continuity in theorising, as core framings and concepts from the roots of sociology remain valid and important even as new ideas and perspectives have emerged to enrich understandings of current dynamics in work. Third, we note connections between the sociology of work and other disciplines, outline our own positionalities as editors, and describe how the handbook emerged through collaborative conversations around scholars’ particular areas of expertise. The remainder of the introduction is devoted to a lengthy overview of the handbook, with individual summaries drawing out the major themes and concepts addressed in each of the 31 chapters.
