Abstract

The Sustainable Building Envelope Centre (SBEC) is a new research facility located within the Corus Shotton site and is a joint initiative between Corus and the Low Carbon Research Institute (LCRI). The purpose of the centre is to provide a base for research into and the prototyping of low/zero carbon built environments with a focus on energy-producing building envelopes. The building is situated in Bay 34, a 140m long former galvanising shed on the Shotton Steelwork site. A section of the exisiting bay is to be refurbished to increase energy performance and reused as a protyping hall. The south elevation of the Bay will house offices and research bases for LCRI and Corus staff. The design is based around the creation of a series of raised research ‘hubs’ housing up to 6 researchers at a time, situated within a modular steel pod. All modules sit on a plinth and are threaded into the existing Bay 34 steelwork structure. Raising the hubs to first floor level gives each research hub has a view over the Dee and back into the prototyping hall. At ground floor level the strips of coloured cladding showcase much of the colourcoat range. Sustainable technologies being developed by Corus, such as Solar Wall, are applied to the module facades and provide heating to both the prototyping hall and research pods. The building is aiming to achieve BREEAM Excellent as a minimum with the aim of becoming energy producing as new products are tested.
