Abstract
The recent upturn in those recorded as self-employed and the growth of the small business sector more generally has led many commentators to herald these changes as bearing testimony to the emergence of ‘the enterprise culture’. Firms are seen to be keen to seek out greater levels of flexibility through the use of so-called ‘peripheral’ workers, and workers, in turn, apparently more willing to take on the increased levels of uncertainty which this entails (Atkinson, 1984 and 1987).
