Abstract
One of the central themes of Conservative policy has been the reversal of the decline in direct share ownership that continued throughout the 1960s and 1970s. The policy consists of two strands. The first is the promotion of wider share ownership in its most general form, that is the encouragement to individuals to own shares directly in companies in which they have no direct involvement. Second, certain tax advantages have been offered to encourage individuals to own shares in the company in which they work. This chapter analyses the 'industry's' claim that the franchise route offers franchisees 'a chance to be their own boss'. It expresses that, while providing a useful starting point, such an approach provides an incomplete set of tools with which to assess the claim that franchisees are 'their own boss'. The chapter also expresses that a comprehensive analysis of the relations of production under which franchisees operate is required before clarification of franchisee status can be made.
