    Abstract
The beste (pl. besteler) is an important vocal genre in Turkish art music. Derived from the Persian word basta (“bound”), the beste is a composition which consists of two couplets configured into a single four-line strophe. Characteristic of the murabba (murabbaʿ) form, each line (mısra; mıṣrāʿ) adheres to a particular rhyme scheme where all lines rhyme with the exception of line 3; that is, the first line of the second couplet (beyt).
